Environment and Climate Change Specialist

Job Summary:

Environment and Climate Change Specialist support the delegation in identifying and implementing projects to reduce their environmental impacts, particularly concerning sustainable energy, waste management, supply chain management, greenhouse gas emissions, etc. In some cases, s/he directly manages sustainable response projects, in relation to her/his area of expertise, with little supervision. The qualified candidate should have a master’s degree in engineering with specialization in waste management, environmental sciences, sustainable and/or renewable energy, or any other job relevant field, with 6 to 9 years of experience in climate/environmental project management, data management, analysis and reporting at an international/non-governmental organization.

Objectives and Tasks:

  • Together with the delegation and in compliance with the existing relevant strategies (Institutional Strategy, NAME Regional Strategic Framework, the Climate and Environmental Charter), contributes to the budget exercise, develop a plan of action and ensure its implementation.
  • Within her/his area of expertise, analyses environmental and climate data from different sources, to prioritize sites or field programmes with the highest potential for climate adaptation and environmental impact reduction.
  • Supports and coordinates the delegation, programme coordinators and the field with strategic and technical support, by defining priorities, project objectives, budget, implementation and monitoring plans in implementing measures to increase communities’ resilience to climate and environmental stresses and shocks and to reduce the ICRC climate and environmental footprint.
  • Writes project review documents, analysis reports, minutes of meetings, communication briefs, etc.
  • Captures lessons learned from the project and supports dissemination of the findings. In general, promotes the project and derives best practices to be shared across the organization, including by presenting project plans, results, outcomes, etc.
  • While implementing projects, can take a high-level view and identify barriers and enablers for environmental and climate smart projects. Proposes how to lift the barriers and shares with her/his management when relevant.
  • Organizes or takes part in training and awareness campaigns on the environment and climate change for ICRC staff.
  • Presents the ICRC delegation’s Climate and Environmental approach at internal or external national and/or regional events and supports the team during their internal and/or external presentations.
  • Identifies opportunities for humanitarian diplomacy in compliance with delegation orientations and ICRC global policy in the topic of climate and environment in conflict affected settings.
  • Supports the Premises departments in their efforts to reduce waste, educate staff, monitor energy consumption, assess, monitor and projects and make the ICRC structures overall more sustainable and environment friendly.
  • Actively participates in internal working groups and committees that have a sustainability component in the broader sense.

General Duties:

  • Understands the roles of the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
  • Always respects and observes staff regulations and security rules
  • Always represents the ICRC in a professional manner.
  • Develops and maintains a pleasant and conducive working environment with colleagues and line manager.
  • Performs all duties with the highest level of confidentiality in the interest of the employees and the ICRC.
  • May be asked to perform tasks not covered in this job description and to provide support to other colleagues when necessary.

Additional Duties:

  • Follows up on all work-related messages and correspondence with the relevant contacts and departments.
  • Is aware of the delegation’s objectives and has a good knowledge of the Movement and other contacts relevant to the position.
  • Collects and shares information so as to improve the ICRC’s understanding of the environment and humanitarian trends and responses.
  • Represents the ICRC in an appropriate way during activities, in meetings and in the field, and avoids any activity that may reflect negatively on the ICRC’s image.
  • Takes responsibility for their own professional learning and development.

Job Details:

  • Job Location: Beirut, Lebanon. with travel across the country.
  • Working Schedule: Monday till Friday, from 8 Am till 5 Pm.
  • Contract Type: 1 year renewable unless already on open-ended contract (for internal staff)  
  • Salary Package: USD 2,897 - 4,816 (As per ICRC salary scale, salary setting processes will determine fair setting in coherence with the qualifications of the applicant and the requirements of the job).

Position Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

Years of experience required: 6 to 9 years of experience in climate/environmental project management, data management, analysis and reporting at an international/non-governmental organization.

Level of education: Master’s Degree.

Field of education: Engineering with specialization in waste management, environmental sciences, sustainable and/or renewable energy, or any other job relevant field

Languages: Fluency in Arabic and English, French is a strong asset.

Computer Literacy: Advanced computer skills in MS Windows and MS Office Suite.
