Position overview

The assistant project manager (APM) will support the planning, execution, and delivery of large-scale pharmaceutical capital projects (>$100M), with a focus on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. This role will partner with cross-functional teams to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with regulatory and quality standards.

The ideal candidate brings experience in complex, highly regulated environments and a strong understanding of MEP systems in pharmaceutical or life sciences manufacturing facilities.

Key responsibilities

Project execution & coordination
Support the project manager in the delivery of large capital projects, ensuring alignment with scope, budget, and schedule targets
Coordinate daily activities across engineering, construction management, vendors, and subcontractors
Track project milestones, risks, and deliverables, providing regular status updates to leadership

MEP systems oversight
Assist in coordination and integration of MEP systems (HVAC, clean utilities, electrical distribution, BMS)
Review MEP design packages, shop drawings, and submittals for constructability and compliance
Support installation, commissioning, and turnover of MEP systems in collaboration with CQV teams

Pharmaceutical / GMP compliance
Ensure all construction activities align with good manufacturing practices (GMP) and regulatory requirements
Collaborate closely with quality, validation (CQV), and engineering teams during design, construction, and startup phases
Support documentation readiness for inspections and audits

Budget & schedule management
Assist with cost tracking, forecasting, and change order management
Monitor contractor performance and ensure adherence to project schedules
Identify risks and propose mitigation strategies to minimize project impacts

Vendor & stakeholder management
Interface with external contractors, design firms, and equipment vendors
Facilitate coordination meetings and maintain clear communication across stakeholders
Support procurement activities, including bid reviews and contractor selection

Health, safety & quality
Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all safety requirements
Monitor site activities to ensure quality standards and specifications are met
Participate in site walks, audits, and safety meetings

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or related field
  • 5–10+ years of experience in construction/project management, preferably in pharmaceutical, biotech, or life sciences industries
  • Hands-on experience supporting MEP systems on large capital projects (>$100M)
  • Strong understanding of GMP environments and regulated facility requirements
  • Experience working in complex, multi-stakeholder project environments
  • Experience supporting CQV (commissioning, qualification, validation) activities
  • Familiarity with cleanrooms, process systems, and utility infrastructure (WFI, clean steam, compressed gases)
  • PMP certification or working toward certification
  • Experience with project management tools (Primavera P6, MS Project, Procore, etc.)
