The incumbent is responsible for supporting the delivery of polished documents, ensuring that the text is linguistically correct, idiomatically natural, and conveys the meaning as clearly as possible.

Duties and Responsibilities This position is located within the Conference Management Section (CMS), Resource Management and Service Development Division (RMSDD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The editorial assistant will report directly to a senior Reviser and the overall guidance of Chief CMS. The IC will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Conduct meticulous proofreading, copy preparation, and editorial review for a range of content in English, in accordance with established standards and practices.
  • Maintain vigilant and critical oversight when leveraging AI translation tools and computer-assisted technologies, ensuring that all machine-assisted outputs are carefully post-edited and refined to meet rigorous institutional standards.
  • Assure strict continuity of style, factual accuracy of content, and full conformity with established United Nations grammar, style, and typography.
  • Check translations of technical terms and terminology to ensure accuracy and maintain consistency between language versions throughout the text.
  • Provide robust research work assistance by utilizing reliable online resources and reference tools.
  • Deliver a grammatically correct, well-expressed English final version of the text, while performing other related language functions as needed and requested.

Desired Candidate Profile

A first-level degree in translation from a university or an institution of equivalent status or related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of three years of professional work experience in language-related functions such as translation, proofreading or copy preparation is required. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Note: Fluency equals a rating of fluent in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and Knowledge of equals a rating of confident in two of the four areas.
