Basic Functions: The Diesel Operator is responsible for the operation, monitoring, and basic maintenance of diesel generators and associated fuel systems to ensure continuous and reliable power supply across AUB and AUBMC facilities, particularly during power outages and emergency situations. The role requires working on a rotating shift basis, including days, nights, weekends and public holidays.

1. Duties Performed:

• Operations Operates diesel generators (Start/ stop and adjust system parameters), during power outages and testing cycles. Monitors generator and auxiliary equipment to ensure continuous power supply. Ensures smooth transition between utility power and backup systems. Records operating data such as load levels, fuel consumption, temperature and pressure readings. Carries out safe and efficient changeover of medium voltage switchgears, ensuring continuity of power supply and adherence to safety standards.
• Monitoring & Inspection Conducts routine checks and intervene as required on: Fuel levels and fuel systems. Oil, coolant, and battery systems. Generator condition and alarms. Detects and troubleshoots mechanical or electrical faults and report abnormalities and coordinate with maintenance teams.
• Maintenance Support Assists in preventive maintenance activities for generators. Supports troubleshooting and basic corrective actions. Coordinates with technicians and contractors for major repairs.
• Fuel & Resource Management Monitors fuel consumption and storage levels. Ensures proper handling, storage, and safety of diesel fuel. Supports logistics related to fuel supply during extended outages.
• Emergency Response Responds promptly during power outages and emergency situations. Ensures continuous generator operation in critical facilities (especially AUBMC). Coordinates with EUU teams for system stability and reliability.
• Compliance & Safety Follows safety procedures for diesel operation and fuel handling. Ensures compliance with environmental and safety regulations. Maintains logs and operational records. Performs other related duties as requested.

2. Work Contacts: Regular work contacts with colleagues from different units at the Office of Facilities.

3. Independence of Operation: Reports to the Energy Manager. Works accordingly to established procedures and technical standards.

4. Supervisory Responsibility: None.

5. Physical Effort: Moderate physical effort, involving standing, walking and climbing stairs.

6. Work Conditions: Exposure to heat, noise, and vibration around 80% of the time.

Desired Candidate Profile

• Completion of intermediate education or BT 3. Plus 4 years of technical certification or vocational training in mechanical and/or electrical systems.
• A minimum of 3 5 years of relevant experience in generator operation or a similar role.
• Experience working in hospitals or other critical facilities is considered an asset.
• Demonstrated ability to perform basic technical troubleshooting and fault identification.
• Reliability and strong attention to detail.
• Strong safety awareness and adherence to established safety procedures.
• Ability to work rotating shifts and respond effectively during emergencies.
• Good team coordination and collaboration skills.
• Fair working knowledge of English.
